Preparing for Warmer Weather

Though we are still having some cold days in Boise, warmer weather is here and homeowners are ready to start making the switch from heating their homes to opening windows and later, turning on the air conditioning. If you’re ready to start making the switch, there are a few things to consider before you open up those windows.

  1. When was the last time you had your screens replaced? Did you take them out over the winter? As soon as the flowers start blooming, bees and other bugs will be hovering around your home that you won’t want as roommates every time you open a window for fresh air. If you took your screens out, it’s time to put them back in! If they have holes and scratches, it’s time to have them replaced.
  2. When was the last time you had your windows replaced or repaired? If they are drafty in the winter, this also means that cold air will be escaping during the summer, driving your bills up further on every hot day. If the weather stripping is damaged, this can be bad news during the months of spring with high rain. If they are stuck or broken in places, they will be annoying to open and close on those in-between days when most people would prefer windows to air conditioning. If you’re having just one of these problems, your windows can probably be easily repaired. If you are experiencing them all, you may need to have them replaced!
  3. Do you have curtains in your windows? On those summer days where it becomes so hot that you stay inside and have the AC pumping, curtains can help keep your bill down by minimizing the amount of natural heat from the sun.
