Multiple Panes

The more panes the better when it comes to insulating your home. Double-paned windows improve the insulation value of a window by 50 percent, triple-paned windows by another 33 percent, and quadruple-paned windows another 25 percent. Single-pane windows are not frequently used due to their low energy-efficiency.

Frames

Window frames are available in various materials. Fiberglass, composite, and vinyl frames each provide a high insulation value, keeping energy loss to a minimum. While wood and aluminum are also common frame options, their insulation qualities are not as high.

Low-E Coatings

Glass that is treated with a low-E coating absorbs heat energy. When applied to the interior of a windowpane, the low-E coating reflects the indoor temperature back into the home, maintaining its warmth. On the flip side, if the low-E coating is applied to the outside of a window it will reflect sunlight away from the home, which is ideal for warm locales.

Gas Fillers

Windows with multiple panes can also have gas inserted between the panes, typically argon or krypton. These gases do not easily transfer heat so they can help to sustain the temperature of a home and increase its energy efficiency.

Spacers

Spacers are used to separate panes of glass in an insulated window. They can withstand weather conditions that cause them to expand and contract and provide a tight seal that does not allow gas fillers to escape. Warm-edge spacers are ideal to prevent heat and cold from passing through the window.
